Ceramic Powder

Ceramic powders are used to increase efficiency and performance standards to protect parts against heat and wear. Ceramic powder manufactured from low thermal conductivity thermal barrier coating for semiconductor fabrication to meet any small or large scale need. The coating process and ceramic materials selected for coating depend on factors such as required thickness, economic consideration.

Common Ceramic Materials used in Plasma Spraying Processes

Four common choices are:-

  • Zirconia

The ceramic is used for heat insulation and to improve the efficiency of components to work at high temperatures.  This coating process is used where thermal barriers are required to extend the service lifespan. This type of ceramic is used in the flame spray gun for an equal layer of coating. To minimize the phase transformation zirconia is used with a stabilizer such as yttria, calcia, and magnesia are alloy. This material prevents a change in coating volume over the surface of the substrate and change in volume cause crack in the coating during service.

  • Titanium oxide

Titanium oxide and its alloys are tougher as compared to another alumina-based coating. Titanium oxide has a lower hardness. The titanium oxide coating is used for lubricity and resistance for parts to sliding wear. The titanium oxide coating is not used for a high temperature of more than 540 °C. Titanium oxide causes premature cracking due to phase transformation. Higher concentrated alumina and chromium oxide are added with titanium oxide to increase wear resistance.

  • Alumina

The alumina-based ceramic used to exhibit exceptional wear resistance. Alumina-based ceramic is chemically inert and stable at high temperatures. Alumina had different grades like medium to coarse grade used as a cutting medium and be used in turbine applications for coating knife-edge seals. And white alumina has a high purity grade and also has stellar dielectric characteristics. A small to moderate amount of titanium oxide is blend with an alumina-based coating to increase its overall toughness.

  • Chromium oxide

 Chromium oxide can be used at a service temperature of less than 540 °C. Coating below this temperature is possible due to their chemical inertness and exceptional wear resistance. Chromium oxide applications include pump seal, textile manufacturing component, and laser engraved printing rolls. Silicon dioxide and titanium oxide are used with chromium oxide to enhanced wear resistance, toughness, and cohesive strength. Chromium oxide has higher thermal conductivity.
